Polarized CO emission from molecular clouds
نویسندگان
چکیده
Linearly polarized, non-masing, rotational lines have been detected for the first time in the interstellar medium. This effect occurs in molecular clouds with a magnetic field, and traces the field direction, offering an alternative technique to dust emission polarimetry. The line polarization mechanism is similar to that in masers, but with lower degrees of polarization (∼ 1 %). We have detected the effect towards the Galactic Centre and its surrounding ‘2 pc ring’, and in the molecular clouds S140 and DR21 (tentatively), in the lines CO J=2–1 and J=3–2, and CO J=2–1. The deduced magnetic field directions agree well with previous dust polarimetry results, confirming that the line polarization is a real effect. This new technique will be useful in sources that are too faint for dust polarimetry, and can also be used to investigate 3-dimensional morphology of magnetic fields, where the velocity structure of the clouds is known. Context. The amount of molecular gas is a key to understanding the future star formation in a galaxy. Because H2 is difficult to observe directly in dense and cold clouds, tracers such as the CO molecule are used. However, at low metallicities especially, CO only traces the shielded interiors of the clouds. In this context, millimeter dust emission can be used as a tracer to unveil the total de...
متن کاملCO and IRAS observations of the Chamaeleon molecular clouds
We present an extensive survey of the CO emission from the conspicuous complex of dark nebulae in Chamaeleon. The CO observations together with IRAS, extinction and H I data are used to study the distribution of interstellar matter in the complex. The comparison of the cloud 100μm emission with AV shows that the far-infrared brightness traces the gas over most of the surface of the complex, spe...
متن کاملGrain Alignment in Molecular Clouds
One of the most informative techniques of studying magnetic fields in molecular clouds is based on the use of starlight polarization and polarized emission arising from aligned dust. How reliable the interpretation of the polarization maps in terms of magnetic fields is the issue that the grain alignment theory addresses. I briefly review basic physical processes involved in grain alignment.

A population of molecular clouds with a significantly greater scale height than that of Giant Molecular Clouds has been identified by examining maps of the latitude distribution of the CO(1 − 0) emission in the first quadrant of the Galaxy. These clouds are found by identifying emission more than 2.6 times the scale-height away from the galactic midplane (centroid of CO emission) at the tangent...
